Functional Capacity Evaluations

An objective, defensible measure of what a worker can safely do — and how it compares to job demands.

A Functional Capacity Evaluation is a structured, evidence-based assessment used to determine a worker’s current physical and functional abilities. It provides objective information about what a person can safely do at the time of assessment, and how this compares to the demands of their job. FCEs are widely used in injury management, return-to-work planning, and fitness-for-duty decisions because they offer a defensible, clinically-driven measure of functional capacity.

What an FCE Measures

  1. 1
Strength and endurance (lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling).
  2. 2
Postural tolerances (standing, sitting, bending, kneeling, squatting).
  3. 3
    Movement quality and control.
  4. 4
    Repetitive and sustained actions.
  5. 5
Grip strength and fine motor function.
  6. 6
    Cardiovascular tolerance.
  7. 7
    Functional mobility (walking, stairs, balance).

Why FCEs Are Used

FCEs support safe, defensible decision-making across:

Return-to-Work Planning

Clinicians and employers use FCE results to match a worker to appropriate tasks and duties in line with their current capacity.

Fitness-for-Duty Decisions

When there is uncertainty about whether a worker can safely perform their job, an FCE provides objective evidence to guide decisions.

Injury Management and Rehabilitation

FCEs help identify functional limitations, recovery progress, and areas requiring targeted rehabilitation.

Insurance and Medico-Legal Contexts

FCEs provide clear, measurable data that supports claims management and reduces ambiguity in complex cases.

Our Approach

Servare clinicians conduct FCEs using standardised, validated testing protocols; objective measurement tools; clinical reasoning grounded in occupational health; a clear comparison between functional capacity and job demands; and practical recommendations for RTW, rehabilitation, or further assessment. Assessments are delivered in a clear, concise report suitable for employers, insurers, treating providers, and legal stakeholders.

The Outcome

A Functional Capacity Evaluation provides a defensible measure of current functional ability, clear guidance on safe work capacity, practical recommendations for duties, restrictions, or rehabilitation, and a transparent foundation for RTW and fitness-for-duty decisions. FCEs help organisations and clinicians make decisions that are safe, fair, and grounded in objective evidence.
