Psychosocial Risk Management
Identifying and controlling psychosocial hazards to reduce harm and protect worker wellbeing.
Psychosocial risk is a key contributor to musculoskeletal injuries, with organisational and social factors directly influencing psychological wellbeing, performance, and safety (see Mental and Social Health). Managing these risks is essential not only for protecting workers but also for addressing a rapidly rising and costly category of harm — with mental stress now accounting for 11.5% of serious claims and carrying the highest median compensation cost at $69,900 (Safe Work Australia, 2023–24).
By identifying and controlling these risks, organisations reduce psychological harm and promote higher levels of mental health, which research shows enhances learning, creativity, productivity, relationships, and physical health.
How we partner with workplaces to reduce risk and prevent injury
Our psychosocial risk management approach is delivered by occupational physiotherapists trained in safety and risk management principles, ensuring a clinically informed and WHS-aligned process. We use purpose-built tools based on Safe Work Australia’s Codes of Practice to guide consistent and defensible management of psychosocial hazards. Hazards are identified through organic, day-to-day interactions with employees, where insights naturally emerge as trust deepens and conversations unfold. These observations are recorded and used to determine when a formal psychosocial risk assessment is recommended.
All data gathered throughout this process is integrated into our Data and Insights Portal, where the presence of psychosocial hazards are identified through our hazard identification process, and risk levels and reductions following implementation of recommended controls are calculated and clearly displayed.
